I have a test coming up in my business calculus class, and I don't really understand the concept of optimization at all. A basic review problem is: "Find the dimensions of a rectangle with perimeter 100 centimeters that has maximum area. Find the maximum area." It makes sense to me to set 2x + 2y = 100, solve for y in terms of x, then solve for x, but this is apparently wrong. The chapter talks about derivatives and second derivatives. What am I missing? Can someone solve this problem and thoroughly explain this for me? I understand how to find and interpret derivatives; I just don't get how to find the optimal numbers for maximizing area, profit, and revenue. Thanks in advance.

this is all I'm given on my practice exam: Puffin is trying to decide whether it is worthwhile learning how to use the optimization features of her compiler. What would you tell her about the binarySearch function to help her decide? Be explicit and specific. I understand binary search, I guess what I dont understand is the alternative? is the optimization of the compiler linear search?? I was thinking it meant some kind of settings or something idk, i really have no idea

I'm interning at a retail company and I've been assigned a square footage optimization project. I have access to historical sales, Gross Margin %, demographic information, etc, but when I performed a regression, the relationship couldn't be fitted to linear, exponential or logarithmic function. How should I approach the optimization?

I seem to be struggling the most with optimization. I am doing my calculus course through correspondence, so I don't have anyone to teach me. Just a text book with examples and assignments. Any help? I know how to differentiate and find the maximums or minimums and relate it back to the equation. The thing I seem to be struggling with is modeling an equation for the optimization problem to differentiate.

I'm using the optimization toolbox function FMINSEARCH to find the minumum of a funtion through ajustments in a vector of four variables. It converges well but, depending on the initial condition, I achieve different solutions. Basically, the optimization proscess is trapped in a local minimum. Any tips on how to "jump" the local minimums and search for the global one? Shall I use any other optimization function? Thank you for your help...
